Project Info In the 1970’s, M D Anderson built the Alkek Unit with the intention of expanding the structure as needs arose. In 2007, it was determined that the need was present, so the engineering and architectural design work began. Early in the design, Delta Structural Technology was contacted to assist with the structural upgrade to take advantage of carbon fiber technology in strenthening the internal elevator shaft walls to accommodate additional wind loads that the taller structure would encounter and a change in wind load codes. An additional problem was that the hospital must remain open and treat patients. With much cooperative engineering, Delta was able to assist the engineer of record in moving all the reinforcement inside the elevator shafts except on floors where the external walls were exposed. Also, link beams separating the elevator shafts were strengthened. The work included carbon bars embedded in the concrete and strips of carbon fiber mounted on the walls. The materials are hospital grade and odorless. |
