McCamey Parge Coat

A defined bonding and coating sequence connected the McCamey school’s existing FRP surface with its parge finish.

Project overview

Delta Structural Technology completed a parge-coat scope at the McCamey school building. The work addressed the finish over an existing FRP surface, using a sequence of roughening, epoxy bonding agent, sand broadcast, and a cementitious coating. The project illustrates a distinct finishing stage following composite work, with the bond between materials central to the proposed method.

Project challenge

The finish was to be applied over FRP rather than directly to bare concrete. That required preparation of the exposed composite surface and a defined bonding interface. The coating sequence also depended on the condition of the epoxy bonding agent when the finish was placed, so timing and surface treatment were integral to the application.

Project approach

Delta’s proposal followed the specified scope from Andre Garner and PSC Engineers and Architects. It called for roughening the exposed FRP, applying Sikadur 32 epoxy bonding agent, and broadcasting oven-dry sand into it. SikaTop Seal-107 was then to be applied while the bonding agent remained tacky and cured in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Each step prepared the surface for the following material.

Delivery and coordination

The scope included product submittals and mobilization of personnel, materials, and equipment. Contractor provisions covered staging, permits, and an area for cleaning concrete equipment. Coordinating the materials and the application window was especially important because the finish depended on a prepared composite surface and the intended epoxy-to-coating interface.

Project significance

The McCamey parge-coat project demonstrates that finishing an FRP system is a separate technical operation. The receiving surface, bonding agent, aggregate broadcast, placement timing, and cure each contribute to the specified finish sequence. Treating them together creates a defined method for the transition from composite reinforcement to the final surface.
