Delta Structural Technology completed FRP work on the SH 183 South Fork column in Dallas. The design request defined the reinforcement in relation to an equivalent spiral-reinforcement requirement and called for a product within the relevant TxDOT protection category. The work followed concrete repair and crack injection already performed by the general contractor.

Project challenge
The column strengthening had both structural and product-qualification requirements. The composite design needed to address the specified reinforcement equivalency, while the selected material had to fall within the required TxDOT category. The prior concrete repair created another interface: Delta’s reinforcement scope began with a column that had already received repair and injection work by others.
Project approach
Delta coordinated the composite design through Simpson Strong-Tie. The process moved from a preliminary design and takeoff to sealed shop drawings and calculations following award. The engineering request identified the column geometry and the reinforcement-equivalency criterion, establishing the basis for the FRP detail. The scope therefore connected the structural requirement with the material qualification and final installation documents.
Delivery and coordination
Coordination involved the general contractor’s completed concrete repairs, Parsons as engineer of record, and the composite engineering team. The sealed package and material takeoff provided the handoff from design to installation planning. Maintaining that distinction between prior repair and Delta’s FRP work was important to defining the responsibilities at the receiving column.
