TAMU Corps Dorm Reno
Concrete repair and carbon FRP reinforcement addressed slab bar loss during the Texas A&M Corps dormitory renovation.
Delta Structural Technology supported the Texas A&M Corps dormitory renovation with concrete repair and carbon fiber reinforcement. The Building 2 scope covered levels 2, 3 and 4 and addressed slab strength affected by reinforcing-bar loss. Surface-mounted FRP on the top and bottom of the slab formed the proposed moment-strengthening solution, with engineering provided through Garner Consulting Group.

Project challenge
Reinforcing-bar loss called for a repair that addressed both the concrete condition and the slab’s structural role. Spalled or delaminated material had to be removed, and topping material could obstruct the intended bond surface. The construction package also needed to account for crack treatment, inspection access and the sequence of work across several levels of a dormitory building.
Project approach
Delta’s Building 2 proposal specified removal of unsound concrete and installation of flexural carbon FRP at identified locations. Topping slab within reinforcement areas was to be removed before Delta’s arrival. Crack injection was included as a conditional requirement for cracks larger than the stated threshold. Top- and bottom-surface reinforcement was based on Garner’s sketches and final design, linking the repair to the areas and force demands identified by the engineer.
Delivery and coordination
Delta worked with SpawGlass on scheduling, engineering development and the inspection allowance. The package anticipated witness panels, third-party material testing, field pull testing and inspector visits, with testing and inspection performed by others. Correspondence also addressed design revisions across the upper levels. Coordinating these requirements before and during installation helped define the interfaces among the specialty contractor, engineer, inspector and general contractor.
Project significance
The project demonstrates a combined repair and strengthening approach to existing campus structures. Removing damaged concrete and preparing accessible bond surfaces are integral to the reinforcing strategy. The Building 2 package also shows why construction planning must accommodate testing and engineering review, particularly when similar work is repeated across levels within a larger renovation program.
