YES Prep School Slab Strengthening
FRP floor and opening reinforcement coordinated with topping and fire protection.
Delta Structural Technology completed FRP strengthening work at YES Prep School. The scope involved reinforcement on both slab faces and additional detailing around stair and mechanical openings, coordinated with topping work and underside fire protection.
Project challenge
The existing floor required a reinforcement layout that responded to the concrete design basis, columns and multiple openings. Revised engineering considered a lower concrete strength than the earlier scheme and adjusted the associated reinforcement layouts. Re-entrant corners and intermediate columns complicated the locations where reinforcement strips could terminate around the openings.
Project approach
The revised pricing design distinguished the general slab-strengthening areas from reinforcement around new openings. Top-slab FRP could be placed without a recess because it would later be covered by concrete topping. Underside FRP required fire protection. For the opening details, the engineering approach extended strips to suitable termination locations and combined closely spaced strips where necessary to provide continuity along the opening edges.
Delivery and coordination
Delta coordinated with Linbeck and the repair engineer on drawing revisions, cracks, field testing and the interface with follow-on floor work. A March 2015 exchange reported favorable pull-test feedback and requested written direction for crack-related work. Coordination also addressed how trade hangers would interact with the FRP layout. These interfaces made the strengthening work part of a broader sequence involving structural repair and building services.
Project significance
YES Prep demonstrates the importance of coordinating external reinforcement with both structural geometry and subsequent construction. The project combined general slab strengthening, opening details, topping and fire protection within an existing school building. Delta’s work connected specialist FRP installation with the engineering and trade coordination needed across those interfaces.
