Burnett Plaza Joist and Slab Strengthening
Embedded FRP bars and carbon layers for targeted joist and slab strengthening.
Delta Structural Technology completed joist-and-slab strengthening at Burnett Plaza. The project’s reinforcement package combined embedded FRP bars with carbon-fiber layers at designated joist and slab locations.

Project challenge
The preliminary layout identified different strengthening conditions above and below the floor. One location required reinforcement along the underside of a joist; another required bars and composite layers at the top of the slab. These conditions called for coordinated placement within the existing concrete geometry, rather than a single uniform reinforcement arrangement.
Project approach
At Location D, the preliminary scope specified a No. 5 FRP bar embedded in the joist underside with two six-inch-wide carbon layers extending along a thirty-foot span. At Location F, the top-slab arrangement used four No. 6 FRP bars over a thirty-foot span with two thirty-inch-wide carbon layers. The project team subsequently submitted Tyfo SCH-41 2X product information for the Burnett Plaza work.
Delivery and coordination
Delta’s planning reviewed the floor’s available access together with the preliminary reinforcement plan and takeoff. The different locations required the crew to distinguish the embedded bar work from the composite-sheet application and to coordinate installation on the relevant face of each structural element. Product review formed a further step in developing the field package.
Project significance
Burnett Plaza illustrates a strengthening approach that combines embedded reinforcement with bonded composite layers. Its distinguishing feature is the use of different bar and sheet configurations for a joist underside and a slab-top location. Delta’s work brought these complementary reinforcement methods into a focused retrofit of an existing commercial structure.
