Fayetteville VA Stepdown Beam Retrofit
Project-specific carbon fiber beam reinforcement associated with coring during the Fayetteville VA Stepdown renovation.
Delta Structural Technology completed a carbon fiber beam retrofit for the Fayetteville VA 3B Stepdown renovation. The scope addressed beam coring identified in plans provided by Bernhard TME. The composite design was developed around Simpson Strong-Tie’s ES-206043 package, connecting the specific penetration condition to an engineered reinforcement arrangement.

Project challenge
The renovation involved coring at an existing beam. The reinforcement response needed to match the affected area and the structural requirements established for that condition. Existing conduit could interfere with access, making removal or loosening of attachments part of the preparation coordination before the receiving concrete could be exposed and treated.
Project approach
Delta’s scope began with work-area preparation and rolling-scaffold access. The concrete was to be ground to the specified profile before the fiber layout was marked. The planned sequence saturated the substrate and carbon fiber with epoxy and placed the reinforcement to the Simpson Strong-Tie design. The scope also allowed for pull-off testing after curing if required, with the test sequence linked to readiness of the installed composite.
Delivery and coordination
The project was coordinated with JohnsonDanforth & Associates, using the plans and composite design identified in the proposal. Conduit adjustments were assigned to others. Delta included the system submittals and shop drawings for its reinforcement scope, linking engineering approval with field layout and preparation. The arrangement kept access coordination tied to the particular beam repair.
Project significance
The Fayetteville VA project illustrates a focused structural intervention within a healthcare renovation. Its distinguishing feature is the relationship between beam coring and a project-specific composite design. The case highlights preparation, access and engineering coordination as related requirements for a localized reinforcement installation.
