Pleasant Grove WWTP Access Manway Reinforcement
Access-manway carbon fiber reinforcement developed around a defined steel-equivalent tension requirement for the Pleasant Grove WWTP expansion.
Delta Structural Technology completed composite strengthening associated with the Pleasant Grove Wastewater Treatment Plant expansion in Roseville, California. The engineered scope addressed reinforcement around the exterior face of a new access manway. It used carbon fiber to provide a defined tension-equivalent contribution related to the steel-reinforcement requirement in the project’s expansion drawings.

Project challenge
The opening reinforcement had to respond to requirements in horizontal, vertical and diagonal directions. The composite design therefore needed to connect a specified steel-equivalent tension force with the appropriate fiber orientation around the manway. The task was a localized opening-strengthening detail within the wider plant expansion, based on the requirements supplied by the engineer of record.
Project approach
The Fyfe calculations developed a Tyfo SCH-41-2X reinforcement arrangement using the required tension capacity of two Grade 60 No. 5 bars as the design objective. The analysis considered material properties, effective fiber strain and debonding limits to establish the composite contribution. Its conclusion specified a carbon fiber strip arrangement for the diagonal steel-equivalence requirement, tying the reinforcement width and layering to the calculated force.
Delivery and coordination
Kennedy/Jenks was the engineer of record identified in the package. The composite calculations referred to the expansion drawings and their design-assist requirement for the access opening. Coordination connected the project’s reinforcement objective with Fyfe’s system-specific analysis. The design addressed the supplemental composite contribution at the manway rather than serving as a new assessment of every existing tank or plant element.
Project significance
The Pleasant Grove project illustrates a reinforcement-equivalence approach for a defined opening detail. Its distinguishing feature is the translation of a steel tension requirement into an engineered carbon fiber arrangement around an access manway. The case shows how composite reinforcement can be specified through a clear structural design objective within a larger wastewater expansion.
