Sundance Palace Joist Strengthening
FRP joist reinforcement combined with section enlargement and fire protection.
Delta Structural Technology completed joist strengthening at Sundance Palace using two repair methods: external FRP reinforcement at designated locations and concrete section enlargement at one joist. The work also included fire protection over the cured composite system.

Project challenge
Callahan Engineering’s drawings defined the locations and strengthening criteria. Most areas used an external composite solution, while one location required enlargement of the existing joist section. These methods involved different preparation and installation sequences, making coordination of containment, access, reinforcement and curing important to the work.
Project approach
The FRP scope included layout, concrete surface preparation and installation of the reinforcement in accordance with the shop drawings. Tyfo fire protection followed curing of the composite. At the enlarged joist, the sequence included reinforcing steel, ground-penetrating-radar scanning by a third party before coring from the top of the slab, forms and placement of high-strength self-consolidating concrete. Form removal was tied to the approved material’s curing requirements.
Delivery and coordination
Delta included final engineering, shop drawings and FRP inspection and testing within its scope. Containment walls separated the top-of-slab and joist work areas during construction. Ground-level locations required a later mobilization and additional inspections, which were captured in the signed scope. Delta’s May 22, 2015 completion email closed out the project for billing.
Project significance
Sundance Palace demonstrates a strengthening program that combines composite reinforcement with a localized conventional concrete enlargement. Each method responded to a different design requirement within the existing structure. Delta coordinated those methods with fire protection, containment and inspection requirements, carrying the work through a phased installation sequence.
