Delta Structural Technology completed carbon fiber strengthening at Tannahill Tavern in Fort Worth, Texas. The scope addressed beams and joists identified by JQ Engineering, combining reinforcement on the underside of the members with shear reinforcement on beam sides. The project joined a defined structural strengthening detail with access and preparation requirements inside the venue.

Project challenge
The work required reinforcement on different faces of the existing concrete members. Underside treatment and side-face shear reinforcement created separate access needs within the same installation. Nearby mechanical, electrical and plumbing services also affected preparation, so the work area had to provide adequate clearance around the surfaces designated to receive the composite system.
Project approach
Delta’s scope included staging and system scaffolding, followed by hand-grinding at the receiving concrete surfaces. The reinforcement was laid out and applied to the construction drawings. The design called for carbon fiber sheeting beneath beams and joists and along beam sides for shear, placing the material according to the structural function of each treatment area. Composite shop drawings and system submittals supported the installation scope.
Delivery and coordination
The planning documents required building services to be clear of the reinforcement surfaces so crews could prepare and reach the concrete. Removal of existing coatings was outside the preparation scope, making substrate readiness an issue to resolve before the work. The scope coordinated access, preparation and installation with the engineering layout rather than assuming that each beam face was immediately available.

Its distinguishing feature is the combination of underside and side-face strengthening.
