Volar Barracks Buildings 2272 and 2277

Exterior masonry strengthening used coordinated horizontal and vertical carbon fiber reinforcement within the Volar Barracks renovation design.

Project overview

Delta Structural Technology completed work on the Volar Barracks renovation for Buildings 2272 and 2277 at Fort Polk. The structural design incorporated carbon fiber reinforcement at existing exterior masonry walls. Horizontal and vertical reinforcement formed part of the wall-strengthening concept, addressing structural demands within a broader building renovation while working with the retained concrete masonry and bond-beam construction.

Project challenge

The buildings relied on existing load-bearing masonry walls, so the strengthening approach needed to respond to the wall system as a connected structure. The design distinguished horizontal reinforcement at the building perimeter from vertical reinforcement along the walls. That distinction tied the direction of the composite to its intended structural role and made continuity and layout important to the proposed intervention.

Project approach

The renovation design described carbon fiber strips on the exterior masonry, with horizontal reinforcement near the top perimeter and vertical strips along the walls. The broader structural scope also called for repair of damaged masonry and attention to existing bond beams. Together, these provisions connected the composite concept to the condition and arrangement of the retained wall system, rather than treating the reinforcement as an isolated finish application.

Delivery and coordination

The composite layout formed one part of a renovation that also addressed roof framing, building openings, and other structural interfaces. The wall-strengthening design therefore needed to be coordinated with those adjoining elements and with the existing geometry of each building. Accurate identification of Buildings 2272 and 2277 was also important because the wider installation contained other barracks projects with different scopes.

Project significance

The Volar project illustrates strengthening planned around an existing masonry load-bearing system. Its technical focus is the relationship between fiber direction, reinforcement continuity, and the retained wall construction. Connecting those features to the broader renovation helps define the role of the composite work within a building-scale structural program.
