CALS Main Library Slab Strengthening
Two-sided slab CFRP strengthening with coordinated review of future penetrations.
Delta Structural Technology completed CFRP work for the CALS Main Library in Little Rock, Arkansas. The scope included preparation and reinforcement at both the top and bottom of the slab. The project highlights the need to coordinate strengthening zones with future penetrations through an existing floor system.

Project challenge
The March 2024 proposal referenced the library’s construction documents and described reinforcement on both slab faces. It also noted that penetrations through the CFRP did not yet have a set design. Any opening affecting the reinforcement therefore required its own engineering consideration rather than an assumed standard detail.
Project approach
The recorded scope included product and shop-drawing submittals, procurement after approval, finish protection, layout, and grinding at the top and bottom of the slab. CFRP was to be applied to both faces in accordance with drawings approved by the engineer of record.
Delivery and coordination
Delta’s proposal stated that a penetration would require a design and stamp based on the reinforcement and reinforcing bars affected. This made later trade coordination a structural issue as well as a construction issue. The approach tied proposed openings to the actual amount and location of reinforcement interrupted.
Project significance
The case demonstrates why a strengthening project cannot end at the boundaries of the initial installation drawing. New penetrations can affect the reinforcement strategy and need to be coordinated with it. For this project, the supported lesson is the relationship between two-sided slab strengthening and project-specific opening review.
