Lexington Convention Center Column Retrofit

Anchored carbon fiber wraps addressed existing column reinforcement conditions where basement walls complicated the reinforcement path.

Project overview

Delta Structural Technology completed FRP column work at the Lexington Convention Center. The retrofit addressed a difference between installed reinforcement and the column schedule after concrete had been placed and forms removed. The selected composite design used horizontal carbon fiber U-wraps and anchors at columns connected to basement walls, making the column-to-wall interface a central part of the strengthening solution.

Project challenge

The affected columns were already cast when the reinforcement discrepancy was identified. Corrective work therefore had to respond to the existing concrete geometry and reinforcement arrangement. Basement walls restricted the possibility of a simple wrap around every column face. The design team needed a developed, anchored reinforcement path that could work with the adjoining wall construction.

Project approach

The FRP shop drawings detailed horizontal carbon fiber coverage around the exposed column faces. Carbon anchors were shown at the wall interfaces, with separate anchorage details accommodating the surrounding concrete. Corner rounding and smooth anchor transitions supported the intended fiber path. The approach developed the confinement concept into a buildable column-and-wall detail, with locations identified by the project grid rather than treated as interchangeable freestanding columns.

Delivery and coordination

Messer submitted the corrective-action package through NBBJ and Thornton Tomasetti. The initial review considered several repair approaches; the FRP submission then provided the drawings and calculations for review and was returned approved as noted. This sequence connected the field condition, delegated composite design, and structural review. Field verification remained important at the wall interfaces where the anchors and wraps needed to fit the actual construction.

Project significance

The Lexington project illustrates a retrofit driven by reinforcement configuration rather than surface damage alone. It shows how composite strengthening can be detailed around an existing obstruction that changes the reinforcement path. The defining technical issue was maintaining the intended action of the column retrofit where the surrounding basement walls interrupted a conventional full wrap.
